XPLR was sculpted in ZBrush. Like most of my personal projects, I was designing on the spot; I did not use a reference sketch or image. As you'll see in the videos, shapes that I originally thought would seem complimentary and / or functional to the character eventually altered while I continued to examine and refine the subject; I, ultimately, wanted to make the subject seem futuristic, organic, hero-like, and believable. 
This is a ZBrush render that contains a fun BPR filter. 
Exploration continued in Adobe Substance 3D Painter, applying different colors and textures to test what felt appropriate. I wanted it to seem like a new armored suit or cyborg model, maybe even something relatable to Iron Man, Transformers, or Pacific Rim.
